The maritime industry has been developing at a fast pace with its ups and downs due to the cyclicity nature when the technological boom is expected to continue due to globalization, digitisation and increased economic liberalization worldwide. The Era of digitalization had and will keep exerting great influence on shipping industry generally and maritime security in particular.

The concept of global maritime security market involves various areas such as surveillance of border coastlines and harbors, defense against seaborne threats and illegal activities such as smuggling, drug trafficking, piracy at sea, human trafficking, maritime terrorism, autonomous maritime surveillance system, ports and coastal zones, underwater coastal sea surveillance, wide maritime area airborne surveillance, efficient integrated security checkpoints etc. The effectiveness of which is dependent as well on smart technological solutions that provide a new approach to threat and risk assessment, its detection and further elimination.

Technology has ushered a revolution

It is evident that technology has ushered a revolution in daily operations routine in different fields worldwide. Developments in robotics, digital currencies and deep learning computers are also set to impact on operations processes. Taking humans off ships not only leads to navigational issues, but also adds challenges to maintenance and other manual operations.

With rapidly changing technology, it is important that there is adequate man-machine interface, as it is the man behind the machine that makes all the difference. Therefore, it is vital that personnel manning the equipment is well trained and properly educated.

Smart solutions in the industry

We are currently going through technological wave that brings to the table a range of smart solutions some are recognized some are still seeking the industry trust, such as blockchain processes that can improve cyber security in maritime transactions for instance minimizing the intervention of humans in these processes.

Nevertheless, we can see already developing methods of using flying autonomous craft, or drones, to assist surveyors on ships, that at the same time can monitor the perimetric environment and alert on any upcoming threat. The rapidly growing technologies will have major influence on shipping industry, hence it is essential to embrace technology in order to remain relevant.
