“Al Fattan Ship Industry” seeks to double its fleet for the next 4 years


Al Rumaithi: We are launching “Al Fattan Technical Institute” to qualify the maritime sector with professional cadres

 “Al Fattan Ship Industry” has marked its excellence in a short period of time and its successful projects have opened up new opportunities in order to achieve the company’s main goal of building an economic-maritime ecosystem based in the UAE and targets the Arab World.

Mr. Mohamed Al Rumaithi, the owner of “Al Fattan Ship Industry” informed Marasi News that Al Fattan aims at being one of the main drivers that Abu Dhabi government depends on in developing the maritime sector and to contribute in the national economy diversification which will bring more prosperity to the UAE’s economy.

1. Can we have an overview about “Al Fattan Ship Industry” and the main services that you provide to the UAE market?

We are proud to have started the shipbuilding industry in 1987, under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, as he is the main supporter for this industry. Therefore, our efforts were culminated by establishing “Al Fattan Ship Industry” in 2009. Since then the company grew to be one of the national entities capable of building world-class products. We are a strategic partner to the Government of Abu Dhabi and we contribute to the developing the Maritime industry. We are working hard to meet the increasing demand in building and maintaining multi-use vessels, not only in the GCC countries but worldwide. We also provide technical support to the national and private sectors, as well as training locals and expats in the shipbuilding fields.

2. What is the company’s vision and how do you implement it?

We aim at being a local and global leader in building, maintaining and repairing military and commercial vessels. We are committed to developing and improving our performance, services and facilities in order to comply with the requirements of the international standards. Our vision aims at transferring all the modern technologies used in the shipbuilding process to the local market. This is being implemented during the preparation of our production plans of shipbuilding stages.

3. What is the capacity of your fleet?

We have a total of 15 vessels ranging from landing crafts, tugboats, barges, interceptors, training vessels, floating docks, yachts, sailing boats and floating docks.  We also aim at doubling our fleet by 50 vessels for the next 4 years.

4. Can you give us an overview about your partnerships with national and international maritime entities?

“Al Fattan Ship Industry” is always willing to cooperate with national and private organizations in the maritime field. We have collaborated with the Italian “Fincantieri Marine Group” to establish “Etihad Ship Building” to become the main logistics hub in the region and the strategic partner for “Fincantieri Marine Group”. The company also plays an important role in boosting the diplomatic and economic relationships in the Gulf Region.  Recently, we have also launched “Siham Al Khaleej Technology” (SAKT) as a joint venture between “Al Fattan Ship Industry” and “Melara Middle East”.

“Siham Al Khaleej Technology” has exerted its utmost efforts to provide its advanced defense and security systems to the Middle East and North Africa region. Furthermore and at a global level, we are honored to be the only Emirati Company that raised the UAE flag at The Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition “Lima 2017” in Malaysia. Our participation in this event assures the importance of our role in supporting UAE’s leading position in the maritime sector and solidifies “Made in the UAE”, which will in turn enhance the UAE’s reputation as a strategic global maritime hub.

5. In such a challenging market, where there are many international leading service providers, how did you manage to excel in the market?

I do not think that the current challenges in the market are obstacles; they are opportunities to increase the competitiveness in the market, which encourage us to provide the highest quality standard services that in turn will contribute to the development of the maritime sector. Therefore, we put a five-year strategic plan that takes into account the current progress and developments in the maritime sector. Our role is not only to look at the current challenges but also to think about the future and increase the company's productivity.

Moreover, I would like to emphasize on our commitment to enhance our production capacity to meet the demands of the global markets by implementing the most recent technologies used in the shipbuilding industry. Abu Dhabi has become one of the world’s largest cities attracting international companies with its reputed world class infrastructure, investments capacity and high class services.

6. Can you further elaborate more on your CSR plan and how effective it is to reinforce your position in the UAE?

We have successfully trained many engineers and technicians for all shipbuilding related technical and operational skills. Furthermore, we have made a three years agreement with the Vocational Education Development Centre, where we have trained 174 trainees on shipbuilding and all the maritime related fields. We have also allocated a ship to train about 90 trainees and provide them with comprehensive information about the maritime field in general and the construction, repair and rehabilitation of ships in particular.

Our plan aims at preparing qualified professional national cadres, specialized in the shipbuilding industry, as it is a promising industry and it will soon witness enormous development in the near future and on the long term. That’s why, we are launching the “Al Fattan Technical Institute” at the end of 2017 to benefit all trainees and ensure that they acquired all the necessary skills and assimilated the latest developments and technologies in the shipbuilding sector. We have succeeded in increasing the number of local cadres by 30% and we are looking to double this percentage in the future.
