DNV GL approves Kawasaki LNG-tank design

Classification society DNV GL has awarded approval in principle to Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) for a new non-spherical Moss tank.

KHI developed the independent Type-B tank for 180,000m³ vessels designed to sail through the expanded Panama Canal. The Japanese shipbuilder says the oval-shaped containment system design is as reliable as the spherical Moss tank but offers a 15 per cent increase in cargo capacity and has no filling restrictions.

The system can work with the Kawasaki panel system, KHI’s advanced heat-insulation system.

DNV GL issued the approval having tested the system for sloshing and buckling. Business director Johan Petter Tutturen described the project as “a long and enjoyable co-operation” with KHI.
